I have noticed that the friends from the past (except Imoen) have gotten Stats increases between BG1 and BG2

Minsc +1 DEX, +1 CON
Jaheira +3 DEX
Edwin +1 STR, +1 WIS
Viconia +3 WIS

Is this to boost the characters to make them more likely to be chosen for a party

or

is there that many Tomes lying around the Sword Coast

or what?

I figure that this is mainly due to game balance, as there are generally less but better NPCs in SoA. Perhaps it's also to discourage people from just creating a multiplayer party with excellent stats.

maybe its because you might not want to choose them if they where the same stats as BG 1
