Bet you a shiny quarter it's bull$hit. The virus described is almost an impossibility. "Permanently destroy your harddrive"??? "The MOST destructive ever" Also that stuff about sector 0 being where the hard drive keeps vital information about it's functioning is a load of horse $hit. The guy who wrote this barely knows what he's talking about and no serious warning would say "send this to everybody in your contact list"

John D: This is directly from CIAC's web site:
Virtual Card Hoax March 2001 Granted a real virus could delete sector 0 on your hard drive but this isn't one of them. Also note that a knowledgeable person could put back sector 0 of a hard drive and get back all your files. URGENT ALERT Please read the following carefully and send it to EVERYONE you know. Send it to all contacts you have, for I agree with the message, I'd rather receive this 25 times as to not at all.... ------------------------------------------------------- A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft www.microsoft.com) and by McAfee (www.mcafee.com) as the most destructive ever! This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine has yet been developed. This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored. This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title "A Virtual Card for You". As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York, according to news broadcast by CNN (www.cnn.com). This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself. So don't open any mails with subject "A Virtual Card for You". As soon as you get the mail, delete it. Please pass on this mail to all your friends. Forward this to everyone in your address book. I would rather receive this 25 times than not at all. Also: Intel announced that a new and very destructive virus was discovered recently. If you receive an email called "An Internet Flower For You", do not open it. Delete it right away! This virus removes all dynamic link libraries(.dll files) from your computer. Your computer will not be able to boot up. SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST!! Yep, it's a hoax. When in doubt, always check at http://www.ciac.org/ciac , the Computer Incident Advisory Capability. They're the unofficial "police department" of the Internet and are abreast of the real viruses and which ones are hoaxes and "urban legends." Thanks Saz,
All other notices that I have gotten from my dad I had read about on the board first. I thought something wasn't right since almost everyone here is plugged in and keeps good track of this kinda stuff. ------------------ http://www.123imagehost.com/images/b...arrissig02.gif "the memories of a man in his old age, are deeds of a man in his prime" |

That's what I said right? I said that the part about sector 0 being vital info to the hd's functioning is a load of horse $hit. The hd would still funcion regardless. Hell, you don't have to delete sector 0 to make your computer not bootable. There are tons of easier ways to do it. They were talking about a destructive virus that would damage the hd by deleting a sector. I was saying that was impossible. ------------------ "The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his." -General George Patton (1885-1945) http://www.asnsoup.com/milamberanim3.gif Member of CLAN HADB [This message has been edited by MILAMBER (edited 08-31-2001).] |
Man I hate viruses! And why oh why do people even create them and send them out to randomly destroy innocent people's computers? I hope that any and all virus makers are caught and put in jail in my personal opinion! Anyway, I haven't heard of these recent ones yet Mr. Harris, but I thank you for the info, these warnings just may save someone's computer some day! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif
