...did for food before we grew cultivated plants for them? 'Cos they sure don't eat weeds!
I've always been a pretty tolerant soul, believing all living things have a much right to life as I do...
But Mrs Tolerant has walked out. Mrs Murder Incorporated has walked in carrying a bucket of soapy water, wearing green rubber gloves, and wielding the midnight torch.... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAaaaaaaah!

Your image a a happy-go-lucky, benevolent goddess of prose has been shattered forever, Fljotsdale... but I agree! Throw salt on the icky things!

LOL! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no.../1grlaugh2.gif
But I don't think they ARE icky actually. I've always quite liked 'em... Killing 'em makes me feel sick. But I DO think it's time my poor plants had a chance! But not salt, no. That burns 'em and they are in pain for a long time. Soapy water is faster and it doesn't look so painful. I just CAN'T tread on them.

I stepped on one barefoot and in the dark once...sprained my ankle when I landed, still screaming! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif
We have lots of them here but for some reason, I feel it necessary to leave them be. Everything that stays outdoors where it belongs is safe from me.

Yeah, that's always been my policy, too. But something snapped yesterday when I found yet ANOTHER batch of new plants had been ruthlessly mown down - I can't keep ALL the plants in the house to keep 'em safe and I get tired of the endless weeds the darn things NEVER eat!
You should see the SIZE of these beasts! They are so well-fed on all the replacement plants I keep buying that some of the snails have shells the circumferance of the lenses in my spectacles (which ain't small!), and some of the slugs are easily 6inches long and thicker round than my thumb. They can graze away the contents of a newly planted tub in one night!
It's unfair to plants! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

LOL I agree, it is unfair. Where they dwell here, the plants seem to be able to tolerate their existence...I think they are feeding on the mulch that has accumulated over the decades or the new growth of an already overgrown garden. We'll see how much I will tolerate them when I clean that last garden area out.

Hullo, Fljotsdale!
If you're looking for the ultimate humanitarian end to slugs and snails, may I suggest pie tins full of cheap beer? They love the stuff, will be drawn to it 24/7, and die what I can only imagine is a very comfortable death. Been doing this for years in my garden with great efficacy. Cheers!
