turbovee 03-17-2001 01:39 AM

That has to be an scary moment for both of those pilots. I would like to know the guy who was able to capture that incredible photo.

And they are not MIG they are SU-27's

Charlie 03-17-2001 07:56 AM

Great shot Ziroc.

Why are you so confident they're Su 27s Dramnet? Apparently the two are almost indistinguishable from each other.

I got my brother http://www.frugalsworld.com/ to have a quick butchers at this. Scratched his head for a second and said "it's not the Fairford (England) crash as that was head on". "Without going too far into it I'd say they're Migs as they're missing the front winglets, but then again not all 27s have them, there are also differences in the air intakes but it's hard to tell from that shot". "My money, without studying in too much detail would go on them being Migs........but don't quote me on it"

So I did http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

Incidentally the English crash exploded in mid air with the pilot ejecting at the last second. He hit the deck, lit a cigarette and strolled around like it was a normal thing. Balls of steel or what?

It was at Fairford Airshow in England in 1993 and I believe they are MiG 29's.

I didn't see your post before I posted Charlie. I think this was a head on crash but the one at the top of the picture has been flipped up and over by the collision.

The two planes were closing at over 1,100 kph when it happened. I've seen video footage of this crash, the camera was following the plane coming from the left and you don't see the second one, even after the collision.

I tried to post some shots of the Fairford crash, but it wouldn't work. Apparently (just the messenger here http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif ) the above shot is definitely not it. In the shots I have just been shown, both planes become instant fireballs and remain heading in the opposite directions. I'll try to get something specific as to where it is later. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

PS. Looking and thinking about it logically, this can not have been a head on crash as the damage would be to the opposite side wings.
