I have heard that you can get Sir Sarles to accept the fake stuff and save the real for upgrading the mace of disruption.

How do I do it?

you can't make him accept it, he will always notice the difference. But the temple will be rather pleased with the fake stuff being a sculpture for itself. So just bring the fake stuff back to the temple after you have angered Sarles, get your reward and keep the ilithium to upgrade the mace.

and make sure to not have the Real stuff on you, as that would be the kind he takes...you have to stash it somewhere so you can get it back when you get the Mace of Disruption +1 to upgrade it from Cromwell so he makes it +2 and gives you Neg.
