Well, when i first played baldur's gate 2 I went rather after the best characters and only pure specialization such as tking edwin because he's a mage but not aerie cause she's a cleric and a mage. What members would you select to create the ultimate uber group?

Well, playing as a good-aligned party I chose:

-Me (Undead Hunter). Kick-ass tank.

-Minsc (exchanged later in Throne of Bhaal for a certain fighter that is simply too damn good to pass up. No spoiling, but if you've played TOB you'll know who I mean). Another kick-ass tank.

-Anomen (becomes Lawful Good and gains a wisdom and charisma boost upon successfully completeing quest). Very good cleric and a kick-ass tank with crom faeyer.

-Jan (basically the game's only NPC thief)

-Aerie. Best of both worlds in the magic department.

-Imoen. Good mage. But can easily exchange her for Nalia. Nalia is technically better but I chose Imoen for storyline reasons.

With that party I breezed through both SOA and TOB on the core difficulty. Works a treat. But I don't think you can ever have the 'ultimate' party as different characters are good for different situations.

well

if you like to cast magic

Mage is good for you

more fighter type

take fighter

want bolt take a half-elf and take multiclass

every party should have at least
1 mage (single/dual) for identifying and aggressive spellcasting
1 cleric or druid (single/dual) for healing, group enchantment, turning undead
1 thief (single/multi/dual) for traps and locks
all other chars are free of choice
some tanks for protecting the above, melee and getting rid of easy foes without wasting spells.

the best NPC for clear aligned parties are

good:

tank:
Minsc (Strenght, Dual wielding) and/or Keldorn (Carsomyr, True Sight)
mage: Imoen and/or Nalia (Dual class enables them to use more items and wear elven chain)
cleric: Anomen (gets enhanced stats, can be used as tank as well)
thief: Imoen (for storyline) and/or Jan (levels up)
support: Haer'Daelis (bard song, dual-wielding, off. and def. spin) and/or Mazzy (very fast with short bow)

evil (there's only one for everything anyway):
tank: Korgan definitely
mage: Edwin (lots of meorization slots, but singleclass sadly)
cleric: Viconia (powerful spells, can wear human skin)
thief: Yoshimo (pure thief) or Jan (for some extra magic missiles)
support: Cernd (nice druid spells and extremely mean as a greater werewolf)

You get top results if you mix them and don't forget that the most essential char is your PC, as you can fit him to your needs

My Good Aligned Group is Usually this one:

My Sorcerer
Aerie
Nalia
Imoen
Jaheira
A tank

Do you have any idea of the devastating effect of 4 mages casting Time Stop and a few Dragons Breath at the Same time While Jaheira Summon a Greater Elemental prince and cast other of those Ubber Quest spells?

This is just a Start. Those 4 mages pack enough magic missiles and other more powerfull Attack spells to destroy an entire city if they feel like it. Same for Jaheira too.

Well Thats easy, you take your main charecter that would be either a:
Swashbuckler level 15 ---> dual ---> Mage or fighter. Or a Multiclass Fighter/thief, Thief/Mage or my favorit Fighter/Mage/Thief, you add either swashbuckler or assassin to the multi.

Now party members would be (for evil):
Viconia: magic resist 65% (I take her with both good and evil
Edwin: his neckless gives him +2 spells in all levels (wow)
Korgan: a mean tank very simple

For Good:
Viconia
Anomen: A pain in the ass but a medium tank, the 7 fighter levels do not beat Viconias MR in my opibion
Minsc: a simply cool NPC an Cool Tank
Nalia: If your main does not have thief levels, her ring works like edwins neckless with only 1 however.

Now if you want cool NPC this mening not pain in the ass:
Viconia
Minsc
Haer'daris
Edwin: (I like him for his sarcasm, but he is an ass)
Aerie + Korgan: (interesting dialog)

I find it odd that there is no mention of Keldorn for good groups.

If you're PC is not a Paladin, equipping him with the Gauntlets of Dex and Carsomyr is a huge benefit to the group.

For an evil power-group, I'd go with 5 through SoA, just to level-up faster:

Me=Kensai
Korgan
Viconia
Jan
Edwin

Then add Sarevok in ToB.

I'm currently playing solo, which is a lot of fun, but there is no way you can use all of the cool items at the same time. My next game, I'm thinking of doing a trio of my own chars, created in a multi-player game:

-Inquisitor
-Cleric/Ranger
-Sorceror

My thoughts exactly - I'd hate to even think about playing the game thru without a Paladin and the beloved Carsomyr..
