Many of us might recall a great turn-based strategy game released some time ago (4 or 5 years ago) called Heroes III. I know some IWers here were quite fond of the game (and still are). I loved that game to death as well. Although I never followed up on Heroes IV, but I heard it was a real flop.

Well this is the first news I've heard for anything related to the genre, and from what the preview says it looks like its really worth getting.

Interesting... and good news, too

As a long-time MM fan, I saw that they're releasing Dark Messiah of M&M... not exactly MMX, but possibly a combination RPG/FPS. There's grumbling by the score, but it's still a ways off from completion, so we'll have to see what it is.

Also, the MM Tribute game is along the way, with the second demo being available from SourceForge. Head to http://www.tribute.castlegobs.nl and get the download information there, if you're interested.

There's hope... there's hope...

Well apparently some people tried the beta and thought it was so bad they started a petition for the release date to be pushed.

Here's the website: http://www.saveheroes.org/petition/

Some of the gameplay elements look pretty interesting, I must admit. All too often, transitions to 3D engines seem to result in neglecting updates in other fields, I hope that won't happen here. However, some hardcore fans always have a serious problem with any major reforms of franchises (see: Fallout), so they'll complain anyway. The fact that Gamespy seems to like it quite a bit says a lot. And if all they come up with is a confusing screen...well, that's pretty dang promising.

However, it's not worth rushing it to market. If there's one thing that Morrowind taught me, it's that delays can be good.

Isn't that's like the previous MM games? FPSRPG?

I think what they're referring to is the solo character FPS-style play, kind of like MM8. Only without the rest of the party.

MM has long had the first person viewpoint, but not the FPS fastest-trigger-finger aspect.

And Luvian, I saw several of the Save Heroes sigs out there. I'll concur with everyone I saw... wait the extra time to test it more thoroughly. You can't catch every bug and glitch, but you should make it through somewhat smoothly...

Heroes III was indeed a very, very nice game indeed. I remember happening upon it due to a friend of my little brother's, who had brought it with him on one occasion. I think me and my little brother spent hours upon hours in Hot Seat mode competing with each other and the computer. We never actually finished one of those games - somehow we liked building up an army more than losing any of them.

:D Aaah, the memories ;)

Ah yes, the giant armies. I was never a fan for multiplayer, as it takes too long for turn-based strategies. However, I loved facing the computer. Nothing saddened me more when my impressive army was defeated in a massive siege :(

Well, I always made sure that my impressive army was so darn impressive that I could wipe out *any* opponent without suffering too many losses. I even went through the trouble of getting Expert Diplomacy -- combined with Rogues, courtesy of the expansion pack "Armageddon's Blade" -- which made every creature on the map wanting to join made. Wait long enough with defeating all guarding monsters, and you've got yourself an army of "Zounds of Evil Eyes" or a "Throng of Ogre Magi". :D Sweeeet!

I remember vividly how in one of my games I waited so long to attack my opponent I had an army of over 1700 Halberdiers all the way up to 50+ Archangels. The Castle always was my favorite. Suffice to say I was hitting the "End Turn" button more than I was moving around - I think my characters were waiting (in game) for over a year before they could thrash the butts of my Necropolis and Tower opponents.

Wow, I never realized they had an expansion pack. What was so special about Rogues?

I thoroughly enjoyed all towns/races. The barbarians were pretty fun (I loved Cyclops). Inferno was definately up there, nothing is cooler than watching Devils and Archdevils teleport all over the place. Tower had amazing ranged capabilities (Magi/Arch Magi, Chained Goblins, Titans). Ohhh I could go on all day. However, I wasn't too fond of the Forest/Elven city. It seemed rather enjoyable, but I never managed to get very far with them...
