I've mapped many games in my day - that was part of the fun but those games were all laid out in nice grids so it was easy to map them out more or less.
These new games with their complex country sides and buildings with multiple levels and between levels and other variations are not so easy to map AND I DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO MAP THESE THINGS OUT!!! I want automap! and I want it NOW!!! (sigh) |
I hear you, Wyv. I really want it as well. I don't believe it's going to be released until the third patch, though... :(
Make that :( :( :( I've been trying in the wilderness to keep track of the terrain and where I think I am. Then I use the compass. In dungeons... I follow the old labyrinth rule. Put your hand on one wall, and follow it. If I see a spot it looks like I've missed, I'll switch to it. I did most of Ulm yesterday, up to and including dual-wielding Fathien. That was a really annoying slugfest... I almost dropped my encounter rate to low. Now I'm hunting through the castle for the blinking armor... I should have it soon. Man, I can't wait until Fargrove opens back up so I can buy some potions. A couple hundred should be good... healing *and* extra healing. |
I've been trying to "fast track" it through the game (not that I played at all yesterday or am likely to play today.
I've done pretty well in keep track of where I am - I've always had a pretty decent sense of direction but I find that I'm not exploring as I normally would so there are lots of things that I am just missing. That's okay, this particular character was "bumped up" in an effort to at least see the places some of the rest of you have already been. I won't seriously start playing this game until they release the necessary patches. WHY did Bradley do this again?? I really don't get it. Beta testing in March?? That's awfully late in the (ahem) "game" to be getting to BETA TESTING! Maybe the sad truth is they know that they can get away with it - that even bad reviews saying something is buggy or whatever doesn't really hurt so much that they need to try to actually finish a game before it is released. These aren't unexpected glitches - these are some of the major ultilities the players want! What's the point of a repair skill if you can't actually USE it?? bah - putting away soap box It is what it is and I will never know why. ;) |
yes whats so difficult about these missing features... is that they are there in the game.
I mean i do believe most games have missing features but youre not aware of them because all traces of them have been removed. But, this game has all the buttons to change your characters appearance but they dont work, you talk to the shopkeeper and there is repair and identify but they dont do anything. There is a folder for automap, it even still says in the opening tutorial M for map. There is one map in the map folder its for fargrove. I remember when arx fatalis came out, which is in comparison a very small gameworld, all the people complained there was no map so they made one in a few patches which leads me to believe its not a very complicated thing. btw you caught up to me wyvern Im in the bottom of the naga temple sort of waiting for a different patch before I see the whole game. Playing a little at a time. Dont get me wrong Im having fun too I had a good time in the naga temple I think the dungeons are well made and complete but between them is sort of dragging for me wandering around aimlessly through the wilderness gets old for me. I mean to give you an example I was so disoriented, I was looking at a printout of the map and trying to find the naga temple and I was all the way down where the safehouse area is wandering around for hours. What I need is like, fog to tell me where I have already been. [ 06-10-2005, 08:30 PM: Message edited by: the mighty stamar ] |
t m stamar -
I don't know what is so hard about these missing features - and I haven't checked over on the DL boards to see if there is any explanation. It really baffles me that they would put it out so "unfinished". If it was a case of running out of development $$ AGAIN - someone needs to learn to manage their time better. ;) Hope they won't be too much longer with the patches. |
Oh yes I think youre right I think there are some skills that dont do anything also that are related to the missing features. I dont have those skills but I think scouting and repair let you spend points but dont do anything I could be wrong.I dont have those skills I think they are in the thief branches.

I haven't gotten the game yet... I could, but I'd like to see if they add an automap. The demo wasn't too bad without one, but for a full game, it'd be pretty annoying to not have one, for sure... the other missing features are issues, but not nearly as big as the automap.

My thief/marauder has repair - but repair doesn't do anything at this time.
I'm sure there are a lot of things like that. Hopefully they'll get the next 2 planned patches done SOON so that we can start playing this game the way it was really meant to be played! |
Well, I'm not playing at this point - aside from just being busy I think I will enjoy this much better when they finish up the patches.
Any word on that?? Thought they were supposed to have had the 2nd one out by now. BTW - this is the piece I'm currently painting http://www.intimateforest.com/studio/narcissus6.jpg The photo isn't exact - my photos never - still it is a fairly decent photo of the painting - Lots to do on it still. |
Wyvern, That's really quite pretty. I used to do artwork- mostly drawings and sculptures, but I hated painting even though I admire them tremendously.
Very nice, indeed! I'm also kind of torn about playing DL with just patch #1. It's really too bad that DW's talents seem to be getting wasted to some degree on obviously unfinished products. W&W was lots of fun partly because of its special "features", but it didn't feel like it was missing as much as DL seems to be. I'm disappointed, I still want to play it, but not if I'll have to start over again. I have precious little time to waste as it is. Oh well... +Dr.Pick [ 06-14-2005, 09:55 PM: Message edited by: Dr.Pick ] |
