I'm looking for a decent space shooty thing in the genre of the Wing Commander series. But much newer of course. Anyone played anything recently that might fit the bill?

Try Conflict: Freespace (II). I'm a huge Wing Commander IV fan myself, but the WC games got nothing on Freespace when it comes to gameplay. Perhaps you'd enjoy Star/Free- lancer as well. Though the first one was a rather weak Wing Commander clone (with none of the great characters that made the Wing Commander series such a succes) and the second had a rather simplistic inferface (mouse flight *groan*). Also, you might want to try Independence War II, it's hard to master, but fun to play when you succeed.

Yep I was going to see Freespace, only tried the first one but it was very good, only spacesim that I think is better is the old Tiefighter game.

Freespace 2 is one of the best (if not THE best) space sim I've ever played, despite it being 4-5 years old now (was one of the first games I played on my TNT 2 Ultra [img]smile.gif[/img] ) the graphics were amazing (and still are pretty good), with a cool array of ships/weapons, and a truly great story. Flawless if you ask me, although it had such a low key launch it slipped many people by sadly.

Other notable space sims are X-Wing vs Tie Fighter with the Balance of Power expansion (Super Star Destroyers!) and X-Wing Alliance, which was more of the same, except bigger, prettier and with a great Starwars storyline (you even get to fly the Falcon through the Death Star at the end of the game, truly memorable!).

X3 should be coming out in one month. Try X2 and Freespace 2 until then.

Been reading up on X3 and have seen some screenies and a rather impressive demo clip. This game looks sweet! I'll certainly be grabbing a copy when it hits the shelves. And i'll see if i can't swing Freespace 2 from some place as well. Thanks again. [img]smile.gif[/img]
