Hi there, we're getting a new computer (and as it turns out, it was my CD drive that was broken - when I tested it to see if it was my disk or the drive it was still working sometimes so it seemed to be the CD, but in fact it doesn't work at all now, so I'll be able to build houses again! :D ) and I don't want to lose all my families and such when I reinstall the Sims 2. However, looking in all the folders, there are no saved games as such that I can copy and then put in the newly reinstalled game folders. So how can I save all my families when I reinstall the game?

Thanks

Navigate to this folder, and you will see Neighbourhoods, this will copy your Neighbourhoods over.

C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2\TSData\Res\UserData

When I installed the game it put the save directory under My Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2 automatically. Most of the latest EA games do that I think. When I reinstalled the game, I saved that folder, then put it back there and all my save games were there.

If you only copy the neighbourhoods, I don't know how much of the saved games will be there, because I don't know how much info is there. But I do know the pictures you took in the game, for example, will be lost since they're under Storytelling. So I suggest you try to find the folder under My Documents. Tell me if it works. Yes I wasn't too sure about that either, I did that in Sims1 and it was fine, but I haven't tried it in Sims2. Basically, if you want to be safe just copy that whole folder I linked too.

For me it worked with just the folder under My Documents/EA/The Sims 2 (I copied the whole the Sims 2 folder there). But copy both just to be safe.

i reinstalled windows with a format not all that long ago and backed up my games directory. once it was back up i saw that i'd lost my need for speed underground saves b/c it too was buried in the my docs dir which i don't use.

Yeah, how weird that they put a folder in My Documents as well as the game directory! To be honest, when Spelca posted that, I thought, hmmm, is this right or did Spelca just install her game in a weird place (LOL, this was me laughing with you, Spelca, because I have been known to copy games directly onto the hard drive, not even in a folder. Mmmhmm :D )? But sure enough, there it was ;)
