what is the better weapon catorgory for an assasin mostly doing bacstabing and bow or crossbow?

Well I would take long sword you can still back stab with it. And there is some great swords out there. You can get a +3 sword really early in the game. I played a thief and used long swords most of the way through until I started playing The TOB then upgraded to the use anything ablity. And for me I always take bow. Seems more stealthy to me.

there are lots of great backstabbing weapons

katanas and long swords will probably get you the best damage
short swords are good too, and daggers are ok i guess, if you can find a really good one

celestial fury is a +3 katana with nice stats, cutthroat+4 is a short sword i think...and i cant remember any good long swords but there are a lot of them

id pick a melee weapon, a bow, and a point in single weapon style

bow over crossbow mainly because of speed, crossbows are slow

is there any good daggers out there? i do not have TOB.

Dagger +4 Lifestealer, has a (something) percentage of draining target of (something something) levels.

Also, there's also a Short sword +4 somewhere.

I don't think that dagger is actually in the game. You can cheat it in with the CLUAConsole or ShadowKeeper, but I've never actually found it in any of my run-throughs.

There's a 'plain' Dagger +4 though, called Boneblade or something. Also, the Pixie Prick is nice, +3 with an x% chance of letting your victim fall asleep.

For backstabbing there is no weapon as good as the blackrazor, if you want a good bow try the Gesen Bow is unique!

You dont get this until right at the very end of the game though and you have to be evil(well do something evil anyway) to get it so it isn't really worth it.

I played through solo with an assasin dual wielding celestial fury +3 in my opinion the best weapon in the game(SOA) and the short sword of the mask +4(TOB).
