I just bought a four-pack of old games today for nostalgia's sake, one of which is Civilization II. I installed the whole thing just fine, but whenever I try to run it, I get an error message:

CIV2 caused a Stack Fault in module IR41.DLL at 0002.19D. CIV2 will close.

Does anybody know what this might mean? I know many games won't run on newer systems but I'm hoping someone might know what I need to do to get this game to work.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Get DOSBox. It is a great old school DOS emulation software. it runs quite well on XP and does a pretty good job on the emulation too. I tried it with my old copy of Darklands and it works flawlessly.

Oh, Someone posted the link before in IW. Sorry, I can't remember the person who recommended this, but I would like to thank him/her. ;)

BTW, DOSBox is a freeware. Kudos to the developers as well. :D

IIRC, CivII runs on windows, not DOS, so DOSBox can't really help much.

i did a quick search on google (such a wonderful tool! ) and came up with several relevant hits, including this page. here's what it says some 2/3 down the page:

Many players have problems getting Civ2 to work on Windows 2000. There are two ways to do it:

Method 1(discovered by David Pritchard):

1. Installed WinG from CivII setup
2. Do *not* install Video for Windows during CivII setup. If you did this already, delete Ir41.dll from Winnt\system
3. Installed the Indeo drivers (v5.11)
(the original link in that post no longer works. the drivers are available here; requires registration to be able to download, but since it's free here's the user/pass - driver/all). This last step is what got the videos working.

Method 2: Just install the Windows 2000 Compatibility Patch
(again, the link in the original post is no longer available. the fix is now a part of Win2000 SP3 and later, so install SP4 if you haven't already). I found method 2 in the strategic games newsgroup (posted by Hank). You should try method 2 first since it's alot simpler.
