Can anyone help me with becoming a mage? I've read in a previous post that you need to perform some quests for it. I need spoilers on this. Also on a side note, my game tends to lock up on random screen transitions. That is when I move from one sector of the hive to another area the game occassionally locks up after performing the autosave. It hasn't proven debilitating as of yet. I just have to restart my computer every time this happens.

I can't remember the exact quests but the person you need to talk to is the witch in the area to the far upper left (Ragpicker's Square) in one of the huts. I think her name is Mebbeth. She sends you on fetch and run errands. The first time I talked to her I didn't use all the dialogue options so I missed becoming a mage for a few levels. You actually can become a mage at the very start. This should get you started but the quest themselves are fairly straight forward.

The first is one were she gives you a seed and sends you to a merchant in the market place who doesn't have the knowledge required and suggest going to a gardener. The gardener is Mourns-for-Trees in the SW hive but you may not know this if you never met him yet. It is the only quest that strays off the market place. There are 3 quest all together. I remember the 2nd quest being straightforward while the third requires a little running around the market area.

With the lock up thing try waiting 5 mins. This seemed to happen to me a couple times and usually if I had just waited a little longer it would eventually load. Annoying I know but to me it is better than a reboot. It may be it is just taking its sweet time loading.

Hmm in regards to the lock. I'm not sure. Last night I waited 15 minutes then microsoft error report popped up and closed the game.

Oh yeah, I can still switch to Mage even though I'm a level 4 fighter, right? Shouldn't effect too much my mage abilities right? P.S. 19 int. is fun.

Sometimes I guess there is no choice but to reboot. It shouldn't lock all the time like that though.

You can still switch to Mage anytime I was at level 6 when I switched. If you switch now you may be able to learn and use some of the spells of a higher level that I couldn't. I did not have a problem to finish the game even though became a mage at level 6.

Cool! After going back to PST with the intention of really playing (and finishing) it I was wondering this about becoming a mage too.

Firestormalpha, maybe try reinstalling the game if you have not already. I assume you are running version 1.1 right?

HolyWarrior 10-01-2003 07:47 PM

Firestormalpha, if you haven't already, download the patch. That fixes a memory leak and other problems. You can become a mage right away, but I prefer to be a fighter to level 6 for better hp, then switch to mage. You have to switch before L7 or you lose the class tattoos.

Firestormalpha 10-01-2003 08:49 PM

HolyWarrior thanks for the class change advice. I switched at level 5 and don't really plan on looking back right now. Thanks for the info pritchke.

P.S. HolyWarrior, for the version I have I shouldn't need the patch. I got it in a two game package with another game, Soulbringer. Both games should be up to date without needing the last patch.

Yes you have the same as myself, with Soulbringer (groan) which is version 1.1. Perhaps It's video related?

Ha!Ha!Ha! I take it you don't like Soulbringer. It is actually not that bad of a game once you get into it and go up a few levels. The start is a little painful however especially when there are no instructions. Planescape is by far the better of the two however Soulbringer is worth a go and is a good game to play. I admit at the begining there was a few times I felt like tossing the game out the window but now I want to finish it.

Well at first I liked it. The graphics were great for the time and all, the engine was okay. It just became a little monotonous plus it's ALWAYS night there...I never saw the sun.
