Anyone played it? I'm thinking of getting it, it looks kind of fun. But its $50 and $10/month(or around there). Is it worth it or does it suck? Any input?

I played the early beta for about 2 hours (way back in early 2001, or was it 2000?)... It didn't impress me.

Here's what i remember, and things might have changed since:

Most of all, forget about Freespace, X-Wing/Tie-fighter or any other space sim:
aiming is done automatically, you don't shoot just in front of you, you get a lock on the target as long as you can see it. So basically it's much like any other MMORPG where you step in front of the monster and press 'A'. Accuracy is related to a skill that improves with experience (bad, bad, verrry bad!).

3 classes of ships and three races:
- merchant (best race humans). A jack-of-all-trades doing Fedex missions.
- fighter (best race alien A). Think 'tank' as in any other mmorpg.
- Explorer (best race alien B), with stealth and other cool goodies (buffs and curses for the enemy). Support class or risky solo missions.

Ship is customizable.

Basically, it follows the same pattern than any other moorpg (AOM, from now on ): you begin in the noob zone, and as you power up, you can survive the next zone and have nothing to gain in the last one. You'll have loads of fun looting fallen enemies AOM. Once your cargo is full, head back to the base and sell what's not worth keeping...

What makes it different than AOM:
in space, it's tougher to keep the tanks in fronts and the healers-casters types in the back. So strategies are a bit more subtles.

Missions: (take this cargo from there to there, come back with a map of this area, go destroy ten zorkon rebel ships...) are, as they say for AOM, the core of the game. But it wasn't implemented yet when i played.

All the action is in the space, the humanoid character is only for the bases (no fighting there) which are made of merchants and mission machines, npcs. Basicaly big chat rooms to gather a party of adventurers.

But, things might have changed drastically since.

If your going to do something like that, wait star war's galaxies or
if you are into the midevil type games with wizards and knights and such try out Dark Ages of Camelot or Everquest
If you get Dark Ages of Camelot let me know, I'll hook you up ;)

Here are a few sites that you can go to to get a visual idea.

It is like playing DnD in a virtual world, unlike Everquest you dont have to worry about fellow player charecters killing you and looting your stuff unless you want to, they have several servers set up for your gaming enjoyment and update/upgrade the program on a regular basis. I ahve played in all the realm's and I like Albion(what is left of King Arthurs kingdom) the best. The game is a blast to play and explore around with. I just upgraded my video card from a VooDoo 3 2000 to a Radeon 8500 and what a difference it made in the scenery and over all game play.

If you have any questions after you check out these sites let me know.

Wow it looks pretty cool Elif! There were over 34,000 playing at one time on that last link! I may give it a try, although I've decided to give Earth and Beyond a chance first. Its kind of cool, I'm an Explorer. Get to do my own thing, although some would likely find it boring. I have 30 free days and if it starts sucking I'll dump it

rgr, Let me know. I am generally on Gawaine server but I have toons on a few other's.

flibulzbuth 11-08-2002 07:34 PM

Right on, Elif!
DaoC is by far the best MMORPG i've played. I also agree that Albion has the coolest setting (the devs put probably a lot more time on albion than any other realm).

Do you know how's the new non-realm related PvP server on DaoC? I love the fact that you can move from one realm to another (= many more dungeons and zones to explore).
Is the PvP still limited to the frontiers (best for peacenicks like me ), or is it totally hardcore?

Elif Godson 11-11-2002 10:05 AM

Havent gone on the PvP server yet, not enough time and way to many Hibs that need to be served a flaming sword ;) To be honest I just havent had the proper amount of time, heck my main toon has been sitting at level 43 for almost 4 months now. :( But it's all good. Which server do you play on ?
