I was going on a quest to an ashlander camp when I found this place. I went in, got stuff, and killed the enemies. In the final room, there was a guy wearing a shiny (meaning enchanted) helmet. I saved, then ran in. He attacked me (as I expected), and kept trying to cast a health-draining spell on me. I killed him, and there was the "the world is doomed because you killed a main quest related guy." message. What? Someone that attacks you, but you're not supposed to kill?

Same thing happened to me once, just go back a savegame if you can. I believe the guy you killed is a vampire, and is related to some guild quest, but i never bothered with him ever since. If i'm not allowed to kill it, it's no fun. :D

Fortunately, I didn't save afterwards because of the "world is doomed" message. But someone shouldn't attack on sight if they are plot-related, and if they are crazy, they should be like the guy talking about slaughterfish instead of having to do something in a fight, or not kill him until you're instructed to, or whatever it is with that guy.

no, there are several characters in the main plot who need to die at the right time and in the right way in order for the game to progress properly.

who cares about a plot? KILL HIM ANYWAY AND TAKE HIS HELMET! soo shiny............

I think your talking to Crazy Batou. Don't worry if you kill him, he isn't related to the main quest.
