I am in the Underdark and my sorceror is about to level up to level 17, meaning he gets another 7th level spell. I need a spell protection buster but I don't know what to use. Should I just keep ruby ray on my secondary mage (Nalia) and wait for spellstrike in TOB or should my sorceror choose Ruby ray as the party's main spell defence buster. I guess what I am asking is if enemy mages later on in SOA and in TOB cast more than one spell protection on themselves on a regular basis making spellstrike a necessity?

Take Ruby Ray! :D

(Of course, first take Project Image and Mordekein's Sword.)

Ruby Ray of Reversal is a wonderful spell. It's only level 7, but removes Spell Trap. As a Sorcerer, you'll have many, many uses for your level 9 spells -- no need to waste one casting Spellstrike when a mere Ruby Ray would do. Also, Ruby Ray can be put in Chain Contingencies, while Spellstrike cannot.

Some people recommend you take both, but I've never had to use Spellstrike. In the heat of battle you can always cast Chain Contingency -> Nearest Foe, then put in it Ruby Ray, Pierce Shield and Khelben's Warding Whip.

What other spell(s) are you considering in place of Ruby Ray?

Ruby ray of reversal is about the only spell which allos you to take down a spelltrap, without using a more valuable lvl.9 spellslot.
Pierce shield (lvl. 8) is another one, though a lvl.7 spell that does about the same is offcourse preferable.

But, since nalia allready has the spell, you could question its use.
You didnt say what other lvl. 7 spells you have allready though, so ..
the only real advice i can give you is: Search for a post by
Dundee Slaytern and compare your list with his allpraised
party-sorcerer and/ or solo-sorcerer spell-lists and their explanation.

You'll probably get all you need from that
hope it helpz
