you disarm trap with probes. use it the same way as lockpicks.

On a related note, what does the amulet of opening do? Doesn't seem to unlock stuff. Or maybe it just wasn't strong enough to open the level 35 chest I tried it on? Didn't get any message that the attempt failed though.

well, opening spell is used to open lock chest or door. eyup, maybe your sspell is just not strong enough.

Also, failed attempts don't get reported. Only successful ones. The amulet should tell you the strength of the open spell ... strength of the spell must be >= lock level.

Also, opening spells don't work underwater...
