After leaving Ireni's dungeon and doing soem stuff I dumped the neccessities(letters, keys, stuff) in teh barrel in the north of the bridge district, along with teh acorns from the dryads. Also I later dumped there the Gesen Bow Shaft.

Now I am in Chapter 5 and in teh Underdark. I -ach!- reread my journal and realized I was supposed to take the acorns to the nymph in teh Windspear Hills. Will I get another chance to reach teh surface and do this? Also, I have the Gesen Bow String, what about that? Or does the end come without leaving the Underdark?

Once you leave the underdark you will be able to go everywhere on the surface again.

A related question: Once I leave the Underdark, I know I can go back but will all of the quests be there? I've burned through Chapters 1-3 so far in an effort to rescue Imoen ASAP, but I don't want to take a low-level Imoen through Ust Natha, etc. Can I fight my way up the shortcut, come back topside, get Imoen buffed up, and then go back down to meet Adalon and everyone?

there is no way to return to surface before completing underdark (and after you return to surface there is now way to return to underdark either)...
all quests from chapters 2 and 3 will be there...

Firstly you can return to the underdark after you've left, just go back through the exit at the elves camp. Secondly it's true that you can't leave the underdark initially until you've done the drow quests. However you can do an abridged version, eg not to the beholder/ilithid areas, don't do the imprisioned mage quest etc.

I'm just about to head to Brynlaw to pick up Imoen. I've done a few quests but want to save some to do with Imoen to boost her xp for Tob.
My problem is that I have taken control of Nalias Keep and I don't wanna hang around 'till the missions run out but I also don't wanna be in the Sahaugin City when I need to go back to help them out.
I know that once you're in the underdark all stronghold quests get put on hold but how quickly do I need to get there and is there a patch that puts stronghold quests on hold from the second you leave Athkatla?

Hmm, I think that the stronghold quests are put on hold in Chaps 4 & 5. I too had Nalia's keep in my game, and didn't complete all the keep quests when I embarked on Chap 4. After I did Chap 5 and returned to the mainland, the quests picked up where they left off.

If you have an old unpatched version the fastest way through the underdark is:
1.) Pickpocket the Snirveblin Mayor for the light gem.
2.) Pickpocket Adalon for the scroll
3.) Fight your way to the exit.

I am however not sure how this will effect the Drow quest and/or your relation to Adalon. If you are evil you might as well kill the Silver Dragon. Yet this will definitely make the Drow quests inaccessible.
