Is the spell Chameleon the mage’s substitute to sneak?
I created a spell that gives me 100 points of Chameleon in order to pickpocket someone related to one of the early thief’s guild quests. Athough 100 points of chameleon should have made me 100% invisible, they discovered me (and the spell DID work).
Any clues about the subject?

I had the same problem when i was lockpicking, thinking i was invisible. maybe a bug ? Btw, welcome to IW. :D

What do you mean ? I never told you my age did i ? Anyway, in my line of work i have plenty of free time, and i hardly ever go to bed before 2 AM. Morrowind is a pretty huge game, but other games like Commando's 2 for instance i finished in one time. Once i start a game and i like it, i sink my teeth in it and won't let go until i finished it. Even if it costs my my sleep. :D

Okay ... For the Invisibility ? .... Just like DnD, once you take action, you become visible (I never use this cause I have a 100 pt Chameleon pendant). So this is only useful for moving undetected, not thieving.

For the Chameleon ? It just decreases your chance of being seen. It does not increase your chances of succeeding. Also if you pick a lock while under this spell and you are NOT sneaking - even though they don't see you, the crime is reported. (I know ...(?)). Holding sneak under this spell almost garuantees avoiding detection. Check for the sneak icon.

As for picking pockets .... even though you succeed, you may be caught - you need a REALLY high sneak/security (yup both) score to pick pockets undetected.

then what is the spell invisibility for?? chameleon has like only a short period of time too...

It's good for taking a break in battle. To heal or buff. As to the short duration of chameleon, I don't need more than 30 s per incident :D . Open lock, loot this chest ... wait, move to next, repeat ....

Suppose your pickpocket skills fail(sneak to get there undetected, security to make your hand light and unfelt), or you are caught stealing something, and all of a sudden the ordinators around start bothering you... gulp invisibility potion / zap invisibility spell... you escape, get to the nearest thief guild and remove the price on your head. You are clean and have lost no item (remember that whenever you pay a fine for your crimes, the guards also remove ALL the stolen objects you have in your inventory - which means for a thief 3/4 of the inventory)

The same thing works in battle: things get tough - invisible - get out alive and rethink about your strategy.

i just use my amulet of shadows Chameleon 80% and ring of aversion= invisibility

Im thinkin of making a ring of power (no im not copying off anything, lol) invisibility, strength, and health constant affect

Thanks for the info...doing the sneak + chameleon spell simultaniously does work for stealing, but for pickpocketing it doesn't.
(i've been trying to do the 2nd thief's guild's quest in balemora for a long time now.i still can't pickpocket successfully. my security is around 50 and my sneak about 36. how much more adapted in sneak must i be?)
