I have an AMD K7 1GHZ t-bird with 256MB of RAM and a Geforce2MX graphics-card.

When I play morrowind, I can't play for more than 20-30 minutes without either being ejected back into windows or suffer a bluescreen. I run windows XP, and the bluescreen says something about niv4_disp.dll. I talked it over with some of my Internet-buddies, and we tried different drivers. It didn't help. (the same problem also occurs on the swamp-level on Jedi Knight2) Is it because there are so much graphics, my card can't handle it and shuts down?

I've downloaded a patch here: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2 .. I haven't tried it yet, but I assume it won't.

Any suggestions/comments? One of my friends said there might be something physically wrong with my graphics-card and I should buy a new one. (but because of lack of money, that is not feasible)

It sounds like you have the VIA Chipset blues. The good news is that I don't think it's your video card. The bad thing I think it's your chipset on your motherboard.

I'm in the process of building a new computer. One of the specific things I did was to AVOID the VIA chipset.

But, I'd try the drivers as they are supposed to correct a lot of the VIA chipset problems.

May the Force be with you...

I just tried the patch I downloaded, and I was returned to Windows after 45 minutes of playing Morrowind.. :(

I'm sorry to hear that. I've got a GeForce2 (until I finish building my new computer). Haven't had any problems from the day I actually installed the new drivers...

Try reinstalling DirectX 8.1 after you install the VIA and GForce drivers.

Do you have an url where I can download directx8.1 from?

first off turn your hardware accleration off completely. sound and vid conflicts can be fixed doing this.

to do this:
...start button
...run
...type in dxdiag
...when the dx diag tool window open, go to the Sound Tab
...lower left: Hardware Sound Acceleration
...turn slider from right/full on to left/full off
...click OK till you close it down
...reboot

open up MW and see what happens.

you haven't mentioned your sound card. sound card drivers must also be DX 8.1 compliant or you will have problems. update them if needed. i know it sounds odd, hon. :D but sound card problems have been the source of most major vid problems for a long time. ;) ::looks around at everyone else:: right, guys?

also there is an affliction we call "ghost drivers" hon.
it occurs when you have installed/uninstalled/reinstalled different drivers for different devices. the problem gets worse when you have your vid card and the via chipset.

the best remedy for this is to remove (using windows Add/Remove proram) all your video drivers. if you know how to, back up your registry and go in deleting all tabs that reference your video drivers. if you haven't done this before, have a friend who knows how to so he can show you, or just bypass it. once that's done, reboot.

you are clean and will have a horrible VGA/16 color screen. :D that's good.

install your most recent set of vid drivers at this point, using the driver's install program.

this way, at the very least, you will have a full, clean install of your vid drivers.

Angel,

DirectX8.1 came on your CD. Hunt around for it, there'll be an installer.

V***V,

"i know it sounds odd, hon. but sound card problems have been the source of most major vid problems for a long time. ::looks around at everyone else:: right, guys?"

Absolutely.

Also true about the "Ghost Driver" problems. I'd certainly recommend unistalling old drivers AND I'd also recommend disabling all on-board hardware that isn't used, if you know what you're doing...

Oh, and un-plug any IOMEGA devices. Those things have conflicts with the SafeDisc protection. Mine is external so I just un-hook it and re-boot...

And turn off all those stupid TSR programs too! Especially Norton or any firewalls. (THough I don't have any problems with my Norton, but my computer doesn't have the less stable VIA chipset, either.)
