Save the game frequently especially before doing dangerous things like opening chests!

Howdy, just started this wonderful game and my thief got poisoned by trying to pick the lock on a chest. This is some nasty stuff though, the temple wants 350gp to cure it (yeah right). Besides any spells, can I just wait it out? How long might the poison last?
