I've put the 3 items on the statue (or what I presume is the statue) and nothing happens!

You mean the statue in the Temple in Suldanesselar? IIRC, you're supposed to put four items in there.

You need to fill the altar with a Talisman, a Moonblade and a CUP. Harp and Horn are used for the statues in the palace, later.

The Cup is held by a caustic villan in the clearing, just off the top-left corner of the map.
