It's better than nothing if all the bolts you have are normal bolts - the chance to stun is pretty nice. But you will eventually be able to find or buy better bolts (+1, +2, lightning, etc).
The downside about the FMBM is that they are *heavy* and unless Jan has something that enhances his STR he can't carry much.
Oh, BTW if I'm not mistaken the speed of firing a bolt is a function of the crossbow, not the ammo.
