My party right now:

Me: Fighter/Mage 2/14
Minsc
Keldorn
Jaheira
Aerie
Yoshimo

I'd like to pick up Valygar and do the Planar Sphere but not sure who to drop. Being a Mage, most might say to drop Aerie, but I really like the mage/cleric combo and I like having two mage types. Who would you drop for this quest at least?

Let Valygar join just for opening the sphere if you don't want to change your party. After the door is open dismiss him and "change back".
His dead body opens the door as well....
