I've looked through the book, faqs, forums... everything, but I can't find any exact mention of what various racial limits are on levels for particular classes. The rulebook implies there are such limits, but it doesn't state them. Can anyone tell me what they are, or confirm that there are no racial level limits? I plan on starting a game tonight, and I need to know for sure before I start. Thanks. I'm playing with ToB addon on Normal (Not AD&D Core) difficulty.

I have not heard of such thing as racial level limits.

Yeah, 1st Edition had em, and on page 20 of the 2nd Edition PH, it notes "The other races have fewer choices of character classes and usually are limited in the level they can attain." It also states "Ask your DM for the level limits imposed on non-human characters." It's the most annoying rule... they totally got rid of it in 3rd. The Baldurs Gate book mentions racial level limits as well, but I can't find anything stating what such limits might be... maybe they got rid of them and forgot to correct the book?
Thanks... good to be here. Excellent site! [This message has been edited by Deviant (edited 10-16-2001).] |
Maybe it's nothing more then a misprint and they ment class level limits.

Racial level limits do exist, they just haven't implemented them in the game.
Probably because it would really limit everybodies fun. What if u started with an halfelven ranger in BG1 and continued on with him in BG2 & TOB (with lvl limit of about 40) only to find out that u can't advance past lvl20. That would just suck and I think that's why they didn't implement them. |
They had the racial level limits implimented in the old gold-box games, however they have not gone this route in this series. (I know because a friend at work ran into this problem when he began an elven mage character in Curse of the Azure Bonds and could not advance beyond level 12, hehehe.)

thank god they got rid of that rule. It was the only rule from 2nd. ed. that I didn't like. Most of the DMs I played with back in the day wouldn't even use that rule just because it screwed up the flow of a campaign. Especially in the BG series. Imagine being in ToB with a 12th level elven mage...you wouldn't stand a chance...though now that I said that I bet someone is going to try and prove me wrong.
