i use:

me (kick ass fighter)
minsc (other kick ass fighter)
jaheria (kick ass fighter + spellcaster)
aerie (kick ass spellcaster)
nalia (a spellcaster + crap theif)
imoen (the plot kinda demands it)

some would say this lacks fighter power, but i was able to clear the four demons in the final battle in 2 rounds (albeit using whirlwind attacks).

while recovering imoen take the other NPCs in turn and do their quests. to yoshi to spellhold.

I like your suggestion, Byronas exept for Jaheira. I dislike her! I'll switch her for Keldorn i think
