Jan is multiclassed and takes longer to
level up, but is an excellent thief if
you don't already have a good thief. Nalia
is an excellent mage, but so is Imoen. Jan
is a fun character to have around, he interacts
with the other npcs more than any other character.
It really depends on what you need in your party.

Well if you need a thief Nalia is pitiful. As I always say seeing thief/mage as her class misleads people into using her and she is all but useless in that department. If you just want a mage then she is fine.
Jan is the most entertaining character in the game. Funny, Great character interations etc. His thieving skills are excellent as well. He levels slow so he won't be casting high level mage spells.
