Any time you dual a character they start at level one of the new class and have to execced the level of their old class before they can use it skills, I don't think that your thief will be able to do that within SoA. In fact I don't think he will be able to exccced his old level with any class compatible with the theif class.

You'll need to go into ToB if you dual class a thief at 16th level because you won't get enough xp in SoA to exceed your thief level.

You're best off dualling your thief when you have 100 per cent in opening locks and finding traps if you want to be a mage because you probably won't want to be doing much backstabbing while you are throwing finger of death spells about.

Incidently if you are going to go down that route try using a swashbuckler-you get handy AC reductions when you go up levels-it REALLY helps when you get your old thief skills back.
