I've never played Baldur's Gate before and I don't have the manual b/c a friend gave this to me after he lost the manual and got tired of the game. Anyway, I just made a thief and can't figure out how to use backstab, please help.

I dont know how to backstab, but I believe one must hide in shadows, and then stab in the back with a short or long sword.

Hide in shadows, move behid someone and then attack

You can backstab with short sword, dagger but not with longsword.
Also I heard about you can backstab with katana but never tried it. I cant imagine you did a succesful backstab with CELESTIAL FIRE and cause 300 damage!!

OK Mr. Ashgard the Sorceror this is right out of the manual wor for word!

A) Stealth: (Hide in Shadows/Move Silently) and Backstab
Thieves can choose to enter the stealth mode-effectively becoming
invisible for a time - by selecting the stealth mode.
Once invisible,their next attack is a backstab for either 2x, 3x, or 4x
damage-depending on the level of the thief. Moving around risks detection.
As well,once a thief attacks the stealth mode is ended until successfully reselected. The Thief must be out of his enemy's direct line of sight befor
he can hide once more.
B) Thieving: (pick pockets, open locks, Remove Traps)
Theives can pick pockets (ranom chance of an item carried by the
hapless victim),pick locks, and remove traps as well. This is achieved
by selecting the thieving button and clicking on the target.
C) Restrictions: cannot be of lawful good alignment;
cannot wear any armor other than leather or studded leather
cannot use any shield except for bucklers:

CAN only wield clubs, daggers, darts, crossbow, short bows,
slings, long sword, short sword, and quarterstaffs.
