So I finished Spellhold...at level 11-12 depending on character. All that I can see as a way out is to the Underdark...where I'm getting my ass handed to me n my first few battles!!! Can I get BACK to the surface and continue on other quests after whapping around Yoshiro and company???

He'll offer you an alternative - but it's a Hobson's Choice really.

If you're stuck in the Underdark, you're pretty much doomed to seeking a way out. Proceed carefully and you'll be fine. Some battles take alternative strategies.

You HAVE to do the Underdark once you are there - no way out till you do. But proceed slowly and carefully, saving a lot. Make good use of your Mage spells - you will soon find which are best - but summoning spells can be handy, as can long range 'area' spells. Make use of Drow armor/weapons as you get the opportunity - they are better than what you have - but hang onto your own stuff as you will need it later...
SOME areas are VERY tough, but all are do-able...

Like Fljotsdale said, make good use of the drow armor - much of it is better than other armors in the game, and the chain mail allows for spellcasting as well if you have a fighter/mage.

Remember that drow have natural magic resistance so don't count on offensive spells to work all the time. In most of the Underdark I've found that magic works better to aid your party defenses, as it will only sometimes affect drow, illithid, etc.

You can take the portal, leading straight to the Underdark, but you're missing an entire area which could net you some real *cool* items. To go by that way, you need to get back to Brynnlaw, and look for Saemon.
