Does anyone know how the expansion will effect a game that is already in progress? Will it make you restart or will it effect your characters??????

I'm not quite sure myself I do believe there is an add on option and you
do not have to start over and you dont have to have the game completed for
the new ToB part.

Aparantly there is an add-on storyline that is all about you and your heritage, that occurs after you finish BG2, and another area that can be accessed from either a current game or the add-on, but which is reporedly really tough, so should not be attempted in BG2 until chapter 6 or so. Kinda like the twisted rune just worse.

Well, Baldur's gate 2 TOB will put in 2 major areas to the Baldur'gate world. One area appears on your worldmap, it can be accessed during the regular game. The other part is a add-on, which I believe can only be accessed after you go to Hell and beat the Slayer.
SO I believe the one part you can access during a regular game, and the 2nd part you'll have to go to the end of Baldur's gate and beat your foe in Hell, and that will start the add-on quest.

There may be spoilers in here so BEWARE. I think it will answer your questions.
