If you mean a wizard being able to wield non mage items, then ya. He can use warhammers and the like at lvl 14.

BTW, the weapon restriction is only for dueled/multied clerics.

Just make sure hes got high intelligence. I think the minimum is 14 but youll be better off with an 18 int. that way he can learn and use the higher level spells.

To dual class to a Mage, you need 17 int.

Yes your mage will be able to use any weapons that a fighter can use once he hits level 14. So as a fighter, you can grandmaster the longsword, and once you hit level 14 with your mage, your mage will then be a grandmaster with the longsword.
You mage can also wear armor that a fighter can use (platmail, etc) but he can't cast while wearing it. Your mage can also use a shield, so you can hold a nice protective shield while you cast.
It would have been better if you dual classed at level 12, the extra fighter level only gives you a Thaco drop, you get your proficiency at level 12, but its not going to hurt you any, so have fun.
