Okay, I have played several times, and this like happened for the first time for me. This is during Chapter 6, and I was travelling from Athkatla to Tradesmeet, when suddenly, I had this encounter with clones of my party members?

Weird stuff, Irenicus wasn't even nearby, any idea what was this all about?

Yeah! That just happened to me actually. I've never had that happen before either, and this is my fourth time through. Kind of fun though, you get to see how fast a vorpal sword kills a person at full health. Ah ha ha ha ha ha!

Does it actually have any point or connection to a quest?

This happened to me too. But I never was able to figure out any quest involved or what all of this was about. May be it's just one more encounter with "some" enemies. I have had this happen many times, and it never made any sense. I suspect that it was a sub-quest that was left out of the game, or that required some particular set of circumstances to play out from this encounter, such as having both pairs of pantaloons in your inventory. Not sure though

Nope -- nothing to do with the pantaloons. I had it happen to me as well and I have no pantaloons -- in fact, I never played BG1 to even get the first pair. I suspected at the time that it was because I had defeated Jon in Spellhold before he could summon my clones for me to fight there. Don't really know though -- it was pretty cool!

You can meet them in chap 2 and 3 too.

I suspect that it is nothing more then a reference to BG1. They are all doppelgangers you know.
