I read somewhere that the developers were toying with the idea of having a mage quest that would transform them into a lich, but it got scrapped pretty early.

They should have made it something like the book of pestilige(or something like that) from Planescape torment.
It gave you awesome abilities and spells in exchange for services.

the whole Korgan quest was a let down.
Kill all the undead, find the book gone, go to the house, kill some wimp guys.
