I want to bring Immoen back into my party later on when I go to Spellhold, but by that time, Nalia will probably be at level 13 or so. I don't want to lose capability by booting her for Immoen, so I'm not really sure what to do. Does Immoen gain XP while she's away from the party?

Imoen is better. She is a long time character of the game and essential to the plot. The only reason Nalia may seem better is because you've had her longer. Imoen can be sooo much better..

I'm having the same problem. When an NPC joins your party they normally join at a similar level. So, if I do go with Imoen, will she have her level adjusted when she returns to my party?

I'm at spellhold now and I will be facing that dilemma as well.
I have Minsc, Mazzy,Jaheira,Viconia (love interest) and Jan and they
are all valuable. My char is a Fighter. I don't remember what Imoens
traits are, fighter/thief? Im leaning towards releasing Jaheira or Jan although
I love Jaheiras healing powers and Jans thieving prowess. Tough call.

Seriously guys, aside from Imoen being better looking (no arguments, although Nalia isn't *that* bad), will she gain XP while she's out of the party? It would be kind of a downer to ditch a 13th level char for a 8-9th level char.

Nalia has so much potential. If you're playing a fighter, by all means keep both Nalia and Imoen. But, if you are playing any other class other than a thief, ditch Nalia. Or better yet, Mazzy, Viscona, or the bard guy.

Personally, I usually use both of them. Imoen is a slightly better thief having dual classed at a higher level, but Nalia has better stats and has her Signet Ring that gives her +2 AC, +2 saving throws, and some fire resistance (30-50%, I forget). Imoen is level 13 when you pick her up again, and doesn't know that many spells.
