As to your question, no, Xzar gets whacked as part of the quest. You "finish" his quest when you return from the Harper Hall to talk to him.

Well, I used the Shadowkeeper program(A savegame editor) and one of the items you could add was Montarons Corpse, maybe you can find it and give it to Xzar to reveal the Harper's trick?

Hmmm... the corpse can be easily found in one of the bedside chests, as to what would have happened if I gave it in I don't know!!!
May be he can get me to the Asylum, Xvar said he could!!!

Unfortunately, the game was program to the way that Montaron is "dead" and Xzar will "die" at the end of the mini-quest. Don't think such dialogue option is (will be) available unless you do some editing on your own.

You can prevent Xzar from dying by killing the Harper (I forget her name) as soon as she appears. Although, Xzar never says anything but:"You're not Montaron!"
