How do I get the chest from the Spectator without having to fight him. My journal suggests that I talk to someone wiser.

I do believe there is a point in the conversation where you can ask him to turn around quickly and just to let you have a "peek" at what's inside the chest. When that happens, you will be able to grab the "item" inside the chest quickly before he turns around. He will realized that he has been guarding an empty chest (thanks to you) for god knows how long and will leave peacefully.

put someone with a high wisdom at the head of the group, or drink a potion to increase wisdom (forget what it is called). Doing either will give you more dialog options. You can then convince the spectator that he is only guarding the chest, and not what is inside it.

You'll receive 15000 XP for using a non violent approach, high wisdom will allow extra dialogue with the Spectator, and between you, you will work out a way by which you can look in the chest and Speccy hasn't broken his vow. Speccy doesn't want to fight, he's bored shi*less and just wants to go home.
