how do you cast this spell?
i try to'but it says something about having to cast it on someone else?

Only the protagonist (i.e. the main character of the story the PC) can cast this spell and he/she has to be a magic user (e.g. mage, sorceror, and bard). The familiar will be determine according to the alignment of the PC.

Nope...only the main character can cast it.

There are ways to get a familiar with classes that normally wouldn't have one, but you'll have to read DSimpson's FAQ to get the info.
