First I lost Imoen, now I just lost Nalia after building her up
buying and learning spells. Is there some way not to keep losing the
best mages in my group ?

well one way is to start as a multiplayer game and make an extra player and design yourown mage.
or you can play edwin. i havent finished the game with him yet but he seems pretty stable.
