I found some shadows in the woods and killed them is that all I have to do there to get rid of the killings?

There's a bit more to it than that.You need to go to Marella's cabin ,find some clues,and go to the 'ruined temple' and defeat the shade lord.

You need to go to the ruined temple and complete the quest there.
