Welcome.

Now that the official part is over, let's see What was the char you made at the start? What class and what stats? If you have not played BG-type of games before, then it's usually good to try first out the fighter type of chars, due to higher health and combat ability. A life of a caster is rather rough at the start and also the huge amount of spells may feel tad confusing at first.

Basically choose whatever race you like most, though at start try to opt for some "tougher" race. Half-orc, dwarf, human.. Try to roll stats at the creation so that the STR, DEX and CON would be 18 (with half-orc the STR can be higher, and with dwarf CON can be higher - 19); don't take any other race at the moment which loses on these stats, i.e. elf, gnome, halfling.. Idea is at first to get you some 'rough' race which can take beating and survive it

Try to set so that the WIS and INT wont be too low, 10+ preferrably. You can let the CHA be rather low, as there are means to raise it most easily rather soon in the game, and also its effects aren't that big of a deal at the moment. Choose a figher, or paladin, or ranger, these are all rather decent melee fighters. Paladins and rangers get the additional spells lateron, which will introduce the spellcasting in general to you, while not taking away the combat abilities. If you want to try out some special kits, then with fighter try out Berserker for example - it's a good fighter with some good special abilities and yet it doesn't lose much on anything else then the ranged combat. But if you look on the restrictions of some other kits, you see that it also has less penalties (i.e. can still wear any armor and use any weapon, while some kits are rather restricted when it comes to, say, armor). And of course you can use the "base" kit, the "Fighter", who has no bonuses, but no penalties either. Same goes for ranger and paladin - from Paladin choose what you like, either the base kit or some other. Cavalier seems to be one of the most liked ones out there, I personally like it too, but don't consider other ones weak - they are not :D From ranger kits, I would really suggest using at start the plain and main "ranger" and not the other kits - that will let you still use ALL the weapons and armor out there, other classes have restrictions regarding that..

From proficiencies, take what you like. Few suggestions - there are plenty of longswords in the game, so it's a good skill to choose if you want 1-handed weapons. For paladins, the 2-handed swords and 2-handed weapon style is really good, as there are some mighty 2-handed swords what only they can use. Rangers, by lore and stories, are always considered as dual wielders, so adding some points - for example - into Two Weapon Style and Longswords - will make him quite a formidable opponent. Fighters can use anything to whack anything, so choose again what you like. I am sure someone can tell in more details about all this, I don't want this long post here to get even longer :D

Choose the name, voice etc and done! Now, mind that this is simply a char which is somewhat easier to start right away in the game, because this kind of char can use any armor, can use any weapon, has the health to live through beating and has the strength to return the beating. Also, it's easier to battle the mobs with this char, since all you gotta do is to spot the mob, click on the mob and done - you are attacking it. Mind though that there will also be monsters and places where this char can use the help of the wizard or a cleric, or both of them. For that you can get other NPC's to join up with you and fill in these slots.

Once you get more familiar with the game, don't hesitate to try out other race/class combos. They all have their strengths and weaknesses and all are fun to play. Whichever suits you best. And of course you can just disregard this post and do whatever you like - also viable way to get to know things :D
