I seem to be stuck in this mindflayer hellhole! I have gotten a collar on two of them and they still will not open the doors in this place...I can't figure out how to get this to happen. There are a group of flayers that I am avoiding because after zillions of tries I have not been able to whoop them without losing members...also tried Slayer mode but always wind up dead after the fight! I am running out of ideas and ...well...would appreciate any suggestions at this point! (and I thought Spellhold was supposed to be the tough spot!!!)

1. If you have some 'collared' mindflayers, you should only have to move one near the door for it to spring open

2. I hate mindflayers. If you engage them in melee combat, they will suck your brains out of your skull. The higher your intelligence, the higher you last (ie. never let Minsc anywhere near them). So you have 2 courses of action.

a) stay as far away from them as possible. Raise undead is the best for this if you have a cleric in your party, as undead have no brains so are immune to brain sucking attacks. Failing that, try any summon monsters spell, just to get a wall of flesh between your brains and the flayers tentacles. Then take pot shots from a distance.

b) use potions of intelligence, and send your best (preferably most intelligent) fighter in to do the deed, backed up with ranged attacks from the rest of the party.

Casting chaotic command on a couple of your party(preferably fighters) and send them in.Mindflayers are pretty ineffective after that.Your druids and clerics should have the spell by this stage-it makes the fight a whole lot easier*checks nervously over shoulder for 250* http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...les/tongue.gif j/k dude http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif!!
Hope that helps.

i have 2 clerics and i always make sure one hangs back and i have 2 raise dead memorized on each. so once the battle is done i can bring every body back to life. i may have to rest but it works. and i made a belt that makes mind flayers not even notice you. you can really beat the crap out of them. if you want a copy its at www.angelfire.com/games3/slackerboysbg2/mybelt03.itm

I have two (!) collared and no door flies open (there are a few doors that I tried this on...maybe I am trying the wrong door?!). So...now I wonder if the door is in where the group of flayers that I am avoiding are hanging out.

I found that, if your fighter got hit by a Mind Flayer, you could run him around the room a bit and, after a few seconds, his INT goes back up and it's back to square one for the Mind Flayer. Chaotic Commands works well

Well, I know that there is one door at the end of the lair (near the end of the quest) which you have to lockpick. However, you cannot lockpick it unless you have a Mind Flayer in your party. The key is to have the Mindflayer right up at the door...it should spring open.

Now...one *important* thing! Make sure that you have collared Mind Flayers and NOT Uthillithids! They look the same graphically, but Uthillithids (or something like that) are more magic resistant and can cast spells. They're basically a Mind Flayer upgrade. However, they DO NOT work to open the doors. You *must* have a mind flayer, specifically. I think that may be your problem...http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

Hope this helps!

I finally succommed to using Shadow Keeper on my character... I realized that I had gone to Spellhold too soon...too late. Not enough experience points to win the battles with all the flayers. Only level 12 sorcerer...outhers in party not much higher and almost all lower. Generally a motley crew that did well to get as far as we did. Its my first time in any kind of AD&D game ... oh well, now I am 'kicking ass', but also painfully aware that I had to cheat to do it...
I have considered resetting my characters numbers to where they were before the flayers...then carrying on ...
