YES, the lower the better, it stands for "To Hit Armor Class 0", it is used in the formula (which I don't recall, but check the BG2 handbook that comes with the game).

no, this is definately not true.
I met some one in my mutiplayer game, he told me his guy is godlike, and I checked his stats, boy, he had 200 thac0. hehe, he must be from diablo ii. the next thing i did was to duel him and killed him. he was like: WOW

anyway, what THAC0 means is: To Hit Armor Class Zero
you know what Armor Class is? it means how well you are protected (the lower the better)
every time you attack, you make a roll of 1 to 20, and use your THAC0 - AC. if the roll is bigger, then you hit the mark, if the THAC0 - AC is bigger, then you miss.

In D&d, ThAC0 is the equation of you'r weapon expertise to the armor of the opponent. All players at level 1 start with thac0 of 20. So, to hit a solder with an armor class 0 you need a roll of 20 on a 20 sided dice. An armor of 1 you have to make a roll of 19 OR 20 .. So, less armor, better chance. But still, depends on the class you use, thac0 drop by a -1 when you gain a new level. Fighter has -1 thac0 at each level gained, Thief and Bard -1 at each 2 levels gain, priest -2 at each 3 levels and Mage -1 to every 4 levels. So, you know fighters drop very fast thaco since they are weapon champions and Wizards are better casting spells that fighting with weapons. All the +1 on a magical weapon are added to you'r thaco as well then strengh score and weapon specialisation. Read the manual for more info. You cannot have a thaco of 200, not in d&d. thaco of 20 is poor so imagine 200 ...

Yeah, because the game stats in Diablo 2 is rather huge, for those who thinks D2 and BG2 works the same way will fall into this trap........
e.g. characters in D2's attack rating is in hundreds, so imagine they stuff that figure into a BG2 character's THAC0....well, it won't be so bad if he put it into the damage modifier... Heehee
