Due to a run-in with Irenicus (I try not to spoil), I have lost Yoshi. I have Imoen but I have been spoiled by Yoshi's thieving skills. Is there any way to make Imoen a decent thief? Who else should I get? Should I try Nalia as a main line thief? I value hiding in shadows, detecting traps, and picking locks. We are 13th levelish.

I think next time my PC will be a thief. If I start as a mage and dual class to a thief early, I should have a good thief that can throw spells off of scrolls!

a good theif is jan jansen who is rubish at hideing in shadows, but has very good other abilites and he is an illusionist. Nalia is dual classed at 4th lev as a theif and is rubbish, worse than imoen. Yoshimo is the only pure class theif in the game.

About your prob: first of all, exchanging Nalia and Imoen is not advisable, as Immy dualled at level 7 and Nalia only at level 4 (meaning I. has lvl7 thief skills and N. lvl4). There are potions and items that enhance your thieving skills:

I think your best bet is to pick up Jan, A gnome illusionist/thief (i.e. MULTI class). He still progresses as a thief and has some good custom items, making him by far the best thief. You can find him selling turnips and ehm....illegal custom items in the Government District.

Imoen is a pretty rubbish Thief who never will get past level 7, but, like other people have said, potions and spells and items will enhance her abilities considerably.

As I mentioned elsewhere on the board, my thieves only come out of hiding to backstab! I guess I will use Imoen with shadow armor for a while.

I ditched Yoshi in a cell in the asylum before the "administrator" showed his true colors, but it didn't help. Do I need to ditch Yoshi earlier? I have his sword, and a bit of him, can he be resurected? I am not sure the rest of the party would want him back.

Once he's betrayed you you can never get him back or resurrect him. You need to ditch him much earlier, preferably in athkathla. Leave him in a closed area like an inn. Then after the Asylum, walk into the inn and IMMEDIATELY click on Yoshi to talk with him. Pick the dialogue option saying you want him in your party. Then he will be in your party and immediately die, but now you can resurrect him!
