Very near the start of the game, a person offers to do something about the wizards if you pay him 20 000, should you pay him, or go on it by yourself? Thanx...

It's part of the storyline, and the only way to get to Spellhold... sorry, mate. But if you want a spoiler, you'll only end up paying fifteen thou anyway, and there's plenty of money to be got in this city.
