the saving throws are totally automatic. for instance you character gets hit with a wand of cold there should be a line saying ": Save vs. wand" if he made a sucessful save. Or nothing will scroll meaning he/she did not make a save and is hit with full damage or the spell's effect.
the "+1 for every 6 levels" means that for every 6 levels of the caster and extra 1 effect is added on. for example a 12th level character casting a spell that says "for every 6 levels of the caster an additional fire arrow is added" would have 2 fire arrows instead of 1 at level 6-11. |
Thank you very much Drax!
Now my gameplay will be so much more effective, and much less confusing. I think I can take it from here, and grow into a powerfull BG2 character! Safe journeys to all! |
Good luck! Its a GREAT game!

Hey all adventurers!
I have played RPG games for a while, but am totally new to the entire BG, and AD&D engine concept. I need some very basic clarifications, that I think is assumed to be known to play this game. If someone could spare a few minutes and answer my questions, that would make my gameplay so much better. First of all, I don't understand the damage rating, (2d6 etc.) how can I make sense out of it, especially if it has +# added to the end of it. I'm sure it's not that complicated. Second what about the armor class, the better armor I give to my characters, the lower it goes?! , is it "the lower, the better"? Third The Level-Up, in most cases when that happens, I can't add any poinst anywhere, just click "Accept", what's the point of that? Thanks a lot for any clarifications, and safe journeys! |
3d6 means a 6-sided die is cast 3 times and added together. Or....5d10 means a 10-sided die cast 5 times and added up. You get the idea. It's the old D & D way of determining damage, hit points, etc. which has, well, stayed that way ever since.
Yes, Armor Class is: the lower the better. AC 0 is decent, but for this game you've got to have a negative AC if you want to survive long..unless you have spells to protect you. Level up is automatic (hit point gain, attack gain, spell gain, etc. etc.) unless you're a thief and can assign points to thieving skills, or you're a mage and you pick more spells. |
Thank you very much berbran!
It now makes so much more sense! Some more qiestions tho: What's the deal with all the kinds of saving throws? Are they automated, or does the player controll them, and how? Another clarification I need is the phrasing used to describe the limits of using special abilities. i.e. "...1 for each 6 character level". How do I interpret this? Thanks again for any insight, it is much appreciated. |
