I was just wondering where you get the staff of magi (detail but just enough to know how to get it) and what does it do??

The staff of the Magi is obtained in the Twisted Rune Quest, which is pretty tough as quests go.

You don't have to talk to anyone to get it. The entrance is in a locked house in the bridge district of Amn, near Delosar's Inn, around the middle south portion of the map, at the water's edge. You need to have a rogue stone in any party members inventory to get through the door. Your whole party is tranported to a couple small rooms. You will meet some tough opponents. I won't say more, except they are pretty high level and you need to have some experienced characters yourself. It took me many tries to beat them, though once I found the right strategy, it wasn't that hard. If you want more info, you can run a search on the twisted rune and there are several good strings on strategy. Needless to say, back up your game before venturing in,,,
