I'm in the middle of the planar sphere quest and I'm trying to beat Lavok but it seems that he's invulnerable to any damage for the first few minutes of the fight and by the time I can hit him my whole party is decimated. Any ideas on how to beat him? Also, what do I have to do to get to the lower levels?

Invulnerable? You mean he cast a mantle. Drop it with a breach spell. Alternatively you could simply withdraw everyone to a little corner of the room until his protections run out.

Cast Breach on him. Pierce Magic is also handy.

Weapons with elemental damage also rock against him.
