yeh he was too easy

killed him with fast spell secuencors from me,imoen,aerie full of magic missiles

he was easy for me, this was only because i had a paladin with carsomyr minsc, jaheira, Haer'Dalis, Keldorn, and Imoen. Party level average, 20. my paladin munched away at his hitpoint while my magic users countered his spells with Dispel, and Warding whip.

Install Tactics Mod and wait for the Final Battle. (Prefferbly on Insane)

Ummm... I think the "1st" battle with Irenicus is supposed to be easy. All he seems to do is focus his fancy insta-death spells on the other inmates. He doesn't really need or want to fight you at this point.. He's stolen your soul so you're dead to him already. He basically leaves you as a toy for his assassins to play with and he moves on to more important tasks. I won't spoil the storyline for you if you haven't met with him again. Some would probably say that even the "2nd" battle with Irenicus is too easy, hence the souped-up mods that improve his tactics.

without mods, the second battle is the hardest out of the three. Tactics mod makes the third fight the hardest by far, and very interesting...

He's not prepared and he's not worried. He *expects* you to be a drooling idiot from having your soul taken. Kinda funny, since when his soul was taken it gave him focus and a desire for revenge... Why would he think it wouldn't happen to you as well?
He's extremely arrogant and overconfident, so he doesn't exactly try very hard.

I hated the second fight at the tree, he kept casting abi-zhalims(spelling)horrid wiltering and killing the elf queen, i then got a glitch message and my com shut down :(
