Having seen off Irenicus in the asylum I am now faced with a dilemma. Should I help the sailor chappie and get a lift on his ship or should I just enter the portal? What would I be missing if I did either? Any suggestions?

Take the ship. You'll miss out on an entire zone and several nice items if you take the portal.
